The Periphery

Why are my memories of these things going on in the periphery of the house in many ways more vivid than my memories of what went on in the grand parts, I wonder.

One reason is, I think, that as a child one’s life takes place naturally away from the more stately parts of the house – it happens in the domain of the servants, in nurseries, night nurseries, in attics, and in sculleries and pantries.
