Despite what Mr McArthy told me, it is also true that many people who’d been rehoused on council estates were feeling a deep regret for the loss of the backyards, the pigeons, and all those things that had been destroyed, and for the old communities that were split up in the process.
There was a lack of imagination on the part of the planners, planners who often seemed to have ceased to plan for the human spirit, who often seemed to believe that people crammed into rabbit hutches of homes without leisure amenities would be happy.
