Nell has given me the record of ‘Die Fliedermaus’ and written on it, ‘For Jeremy, from his loving boy’. It is seductive music. I play it again and again. Then tonight came Lucy’s present ‘Gardening Notes’ carefully copied out for me, so many poems. Looking through them I felt that I was seeing my past written there. The Rupert Brooke that was ours at Grantchester, the Keats which first she read me on the barge after the party at Rose Island.
Now that Nell has left to go skiing in Switzerland, I think sadly that for two weeks my lips will not be touched by hers. She has left her mark on the studio; her small purple umbrella hangs from a nail above the stove.
