Our neighbour Harry Conod; ‘Mr Sandford became captain in the Home Guard, Mr Lewis from Eye Court became Lieutenant, and all the local men joined up.
‘My father joined as well, but because of his farming commitments he was always unable to attend.
‘I remember him in the milk house one day, and Mr Sandford came in and said, “Look here, Mr Conod, you’re not attending the Home Guard as you should.”
‘My father replied, “I am too damn busy to come, I have my work to attend to, and it’s far more important than running about with a bunch of soldiers.”
‘So Mr Sandford asked him to resign.
‘Mr Sandford was transferred from the Home Guard Captiancy to a regular army Captain, he had a group of soldiers with lorries that were based at Eye Manor, it was also a place for storing ammunition. It was all very secret.’
