Belinda said yesterday of Ron, ‘It was bad enough his stealing the silver whenever we went into the sort of house that has silver, I mean anybody can do that, I could perfectly easily slip a few into my pocket. But Ron had to make quite certain that everyone had seen that he was stealing it. And they all behave like that, all the crooks, always look as close as they possibly can to the crooks in the cinema. And they’re always inventing this private language, which they think nobody else can understand, such as calling a room a Gaff, and a girl who could be used in some way or other is a Mystery, and an ordinary girl of course is a Bird. Once I took someone along there to this hideout shop they had as a centre for their transactions and they didn’t realise I was with him and someone edged up to him and said, “Have you got the stuff? How did the job go? Did the Old Bill behave themselves?” That sort of thing.’
